Twilight Girls Gone Wild! (An Early Look at The Runaways)
The Runaways tells the story of its namesake band—the all-girl teen band that launched Jett’s career in the 1970s. It tells the age-old tale of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll, but with the twist that it’s all from a young woman’s perspective. Directed by photographer and music-video director Floria Sigismondi, the movie stars two of the most sought-after young actresses working today: Dakota Fanning, who plays the drug-addled lead singer, Cherie Currie; and Stewart, the face of the Twilight film franchise (which also, coincidentally, features Fanning). Both actresses are roughly the age their fictional counterparts were at the height of their fame, and both seem eager to leave behind their doe-eyed images (and fan bases) and venture into more mature artistic territory. Judging from this effort, they may well succeed.
Aggressive, raw, and amped up on frenetic—and sexual—hunched-punk intensity, Stewart’s Jett smokes, snorts, and struts with abandon, her energy centered strategically in her pelvis. (I can’t wait to see what the Twi-hards make of this!) A favorite scene—and there were many—takes place in the bathroom where Jett gives a blasé “lesson” to one of her band mates about how to pleasure oneself with a shower head while visualizing Farrah Fawcett. This is a woman who revels in her well-earned bad reputation. “I want what he’s wearing,” she says, and she is never disappointed.
Then there’s Fanning as Currie, the kittenish blonde who fronts the band like a female crossbreed of Ziggy Stardust and Keith Richards. Like Jett, she’s an outcast born into a virtually fatherless home, game for whatever adventure comes her way. She falls into The Runaways by chance (unlike Jett, who charges ahead with unbridled intensity) and easily succumbs to rock’s infinite varieties of candy. Fanning’s performance is both chilling and convincing, and will serve as the cautionary foil to every underage girl who sees this movie (they will find a way to get in) and is inspired to mimic its lifestyle (they will want to mimic it—I found myself jonesing for a guitar and a cigarette when it was over).
While there’s nothing that will surprise you story-wise, especially if you’ve read about the history of The Runaways, the sheer force of the girl-power energy that went into the film combined with the contagious ferocity of the music (featuring impressive vocals by Stewart and Fanning) will leave you jumpy—in a good way. You’ll want the soundtrack, not to mention every album The Runaways and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts produced, and you’ll definitely want more of Stewart and Fanning.
And what does Joan Jett want? Nothing too complicated. I happened to overhear her in the ladies room after the screening telling one admirer, “I just want people to enjoy it.”

Dakota Fanning Nearly Went Topless in The ‘Runaways’
We wonder if Dakota Fanning knew she was in for such a racy role when she decided to play The Runaways lead singer Cherie Curie. If director Floria Sigismondi had her way, Dakota would have gone topless!
“If I used an 18-year-old, I could’ve maybe had her topless….just to give it a little more reality,” Floria tells Matt Donnelly of LATimes.com. “There were a lot of things I couldn’t do that I wanted to do.” Meaning, we assume, that if she had been two years older, we would have been seeing a whole lot more of north Dakota than ever before.
One thing the director DID do was instigate an onscreen smooch between Dakota and her co-star, Twilight’s Kristen Stewart, 20. But the kiss itself isn’t as steamy as you’d think. “It’s pretty subjective,” Stewart said of the girl-on-girl action. “It was never written in the script, like, ‘hardcore sex scene.’”
Something tells us its better that way. We don’t know if we could handle seeing our sweet Bella in compromising positions just yet! Save that for Breaking Dawn, Kristen, and your real-life boyfriend Robert Pattinson!

Q & A "The Runaways"
Q: What do you love most about your art?
Sigismondi: Doing it, I think. The process, just sitting there and coming up with ideas. And seeing those ideas come into the physical, physical world is the most exciting thing.
Q: Dakota, had you done any singing before making this movie?
Fanning: I had done some singing before this, but nothing this iconic and these songs, I really felt the need to really do them justice. There are so many Runaways fans out there that want them to be exactly the way Cherie sang them, but I thought it was important for me to actually sing them, so I hope I did as good a job as Cherie did.
Q: Kristen and Dakota, how much time did you spend with Joan and Cherie to create these roles?
Stewart: Everybody knows Joan Jett, right, but nobody knows how hard it was to become her. We were pretty lucky to have grown up as girls being told we can do whatever we want and that wasn’t the case for them. So considering how important it was for Joan and Cherie I’m surprised how open they were and they didn’t even know who we were. It’s weird to talk about your friend when they’re standing right there.
Audience member: We can’t hear you.
Stewart: Good. She has such an undeniable presence. It’s not like it takes a really perceptive person to get to know somebody like that. She’s pretty much … you know, whatever, yeah.
Fanning: Okay, um, for me, when I first met Cherie, she has such a big personality and when I met her, she kind of wore her emotions and her feeling and her thoughts on her sleeve and was very open and honest with me about how she felt during this whole experience and to have her there for me was unbelievable and that was the only reason I was able to do what I was able to do.
Q: How did Joan and Cherie feel the first time you saw the movie?
Jett: Very surreal, but in a good way. We were just talking about these two becoming us and it was really incredible and I have to give them such credit for their work ethic, because it wasn’t like it was just a gig. They were deadly serious about it and you can see that in all their preparation. I wanted to be there for Kristen to get whatever she needed from me, and I was also willing to get out of her face, if that’s what she needed.
Currie: Wow. I’m actually shaking right now. First of all, Dakota Fanning is my favorite actress of all time. And I keep saying that I’m going to wake up from this dream, but you know what? I don’t wake up. And I truly believe that I’m the most blessed human being on the planet. And Joan, I knew from the minute I met her that she was going to be the godmother of rock and roll. And I was right. Michael Shannon was incredible – you scared me.
Jett: It’s a really personal thing for us, and this was our dream, so it was very emotional to see this happen because we really believed in what we were doing. We thought we were doing great rock & roll. We weren’t hurting anybody, we were just trying to have fun and people took offense to that, and so it became the principle about following your dreams and not letting other people dictate what you’re gonna do in life.

Kristen Stewart Talks 'Breaking Dawn' Script, Hopes Renesmee Won't Be A 'Scary, Teeth Baby'
There is a multitude of questions surrounding "Breaking Dawn," the potentially final installment of "The Twilight Saga," including who will direct the film, when it will begin production and whether or not it will be broken up into two films — but as it stands, the only true guarantee is that "Breaking Dawn" will exist on film some day.
At the Sundance Film Festival, MTV News spoke with Kristen Stewart to see if she could shed some much needed light on the highly anticipated movie, but it turns out that the on-screen Bella Swan is just as in the dark as the rest of the franchise's fans.
"I don't even know if it's going to be one [film] or two, or who is directing it, or when it's even going [to start]," she admitted. "I know that it's going to go, but not when yet."
The most important issue facing Kristen's character is the birth of Edward and Bella's baby daughter Renesmee. In Stephenie Meyer's novel, Renesmee's birth is so graphic that Bella nearly dies but is ultimately converted into a vampire and saved by Edward. While the scene is currently unwritten as far as the "Breaking Dawn" script goes, Kristen is eager to learn how it will translate from book to film.
"I haven't seen a script, but I'm not alone in really, really wondering how they're going to handle that," she said.
As important as the birth scene itself is the baby that is born. Will Renesmee be played by an actual baby or will she be given the CGI treatment? It's a tricky question that Kristen doesn't have an easy answer for, but one thing is certain — Renesmee has to be adorable.
"Little Renesmee, she's got to be cute," said the actress. "She can't just be this scary superhuman teeth baby!

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning See Double at 'Runaways' Premiere
Rock 'n Roll rebels and teen stars came together in an unlikely pairing in Park City, Utah this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival premiere of 'The Runaways.'
The biopic, which tells the story of "jailbait rock" band The Runaways, stars some of Hollywood's most recognizable young faces, including Kristen Stewart, playing Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning, who plays Runaways lead singer Cherie Currie, and 'Arrested Development' actress Alia Shawkat.
The evening before the premiere, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts performed to a packed crowd at the Harry O's concert series. People reports that during the band's performance, Jett brought Stewart and Fanning onstage, thanking them for their performances in the film.
Stewart showed equal excitement for the festival, telling MTV, "The coolest thing about Sundance is coming back and seeing the people you made the movies with...Everyone on 'The Runaways,' we became really close. Me and Dakota are really close. I love that she can see [my other Sundance film 'Welcome to the Rileys'] with me."
The following day, the actresses and their real-life counterparts posed for photos on the red carpet at the film's premiere.
