First-time director Jake Scott (son of Ridley, nephew of Tony, both of whom are executive producers) shows a deft hand with actors in this drama. Doug Riley (James Gandolfini) is a lonely Indianapolis plumbing-supply exec married to Lois (Melissa Leo), but their marriage has stagnated — he's having an affair, she never leaves the house — since their teen daughter was killed eight years ago. While at a convention in New Orleans, Doug encounters Mallory (Kristen Stewart), a 16-year-old runaway working as a stripper and prostitute. Doug befriends Mallory and starts helping her out, which confuses the girl because she only deals with men this age sexually. Ken Hixon's script takes predictable turns, and plays Lois' agoraphobia too much for laughs. But the performances by Gandolfini, Stewart and especially Leo are touching and dynamic.
